Etihad’s A380 First Class Apartments are one of the most absurd luxury products in commercial aviation: a private suite with a separate bed, elevated dining, and access to onboard shower facilities. And get this, it can be flown on a specific route that can be booked for 50,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles plus about $50 in taxes and fees. In other words, under $100 out of pocket for a product that routinely sells for several thousand dollars and will likely ruin your future flights.
Booking the Right Plane
Here’s the thing. Not all Etihad First Class seats are created equal. Just because you’re booking “First Class” does not guarantee you will be in Etihad’s highly publicized Apartments. The largest factor determining the seat you’ll be in is the plane you’re on. Below are the seat maps of Etihad’s First Class cabins, which are available on three aircraft types in their fleet. They are arranged in order of desirability, with the A321 being the least desirable, the A380 being the most desirable, and the 787s and 777s fitting somewhere in between.
Etihad sells multiple First Class products, and they are not equal. The First Class Apartments are on the Airbus A380, and that is the plane you must fly to get this experience. Etihad is also rolling out a First Suite on the Airbus A321LR, which is genuinely nice for a narrowbody aircraft, but it is vastly inferior to the Apartments. There is no A380 space, no Apartments layout, and the overall onboard experience is very different.
To their credit, Etihad publishes a guide outlining the routes currently operated by their A380s and therefore their best First Class product. The airline only has seven of these massive aircraft and currently flies them to London, Toronto, Paris, and Singapore. Even if you are booking one of these routes, make sure you are paying close attention to the seat map and the aircraft type listed.
How to Book
Now that that is out of the way, how can you fly like this without forking over an eye watering amount?
American Airlines AAdvantage is easily the best way to book Etihad’s A380 First Apartments because the award pricing can be unusually favorable and the out of pocket fees are often low. While availability is often limited and requires some date flexibility, the cost simply cannot be beaten.
Between Singapore and Abu Dhabi: 50,000 miles
Between London or Paris and Abu Dhabi: 62,500 miles
That Singapore price point is the headline. Fifty thousand miles is attainable, and taxes can be modest. My booking came out to about $50. If we value AAdvantage miles at one cent each, that means I paid roughly $550 for one of the nicest flights I have ever been on, which probably does not even cover the champagne and caviar.
Earning the Miles
The tricky part is earning AAdvantage miles. This can be a bit finicky because there are no reliable credit card transfer partners that allow you to easily convert Chase or Amex points into the program.
That being said, there are four feasible ways to quickly accrue AAdvantage miles.
1. Credit Card Welcome Bonuses
The simplest and most reliable way to earn 50,000 or more AAdvantage miles quickly is through a co-branded credit card welcome bonus. American Airlines credit cards are issued primarily by Citi and Barclays, and welcome bonuses frequently range from 50,000 to 75,000 miles after meeting minimum spending requirements. One bonus at that level is enough for a Singapore to Abu Dhabi Etihad First Apartment at 50,000 miles, or nearly enough for Europe to Abu Dhabi at 62,500 miles. For most readers, this is by far the most efficient path. One well timed approval can unlock the entire redemption outright.
2. Earn Miles Through the AAdvantage Shopping Portal and Partner Offers
If you are not flying often or relying solely on card bonuses, you can boost your AAdvantage balance through American’s online shopping portal and partner platforms. The AAdvantage eShopping portal allows you to earn bonus miles on purchases you would make anyway by clicking through the portal to more than 1,200 participating retailers. Typical portal offers range from about one to five miles per dollar spent, and during certain promotional periods you may see even higher bonus rates on specific stores or categories.
The miles you earn through AAdvantage eShopping count as redeemable miles that can be applied to award flights like your Etihad Apartments redemption. In many cases, these earned miles also count as Loyalty Points, meaning they contribute toward elite status. American awards one Loyalty Point for every eligible AAdvantage mile you earn through partner activity.
You can also take advantage of partner programs such as SimplyMiles, where you link a Mastercard and earn bonus miles for targeted spending offers at participating merchants. Occasionally, stacking portal bonuses, partner promotions, and card earnings on a large purchase can generate several thousand miles in a single transaction. While this method alone may not get you to 50,000 miles overnight, it can significantly supplement your balance.
3. Flying Paid Tickets
You can earn AAdvantage miles from flying American Airlines, its oneworld partners, and select Etihad tickets, but this method is significantly slower unless you already travel frequently for work. While paid flying can supplement your balance, it is rarely the fastest route to 50,000 miles. For most readers, credit card bonuses will dramatically outpace flight earnings.
4. Buying Miles During Promotions
American Airlines regularly sells miles during promotional periods, sometimes offering bonuses of 30 to 60 percent. Even so, purchasing 50,000 miles outright will typically cost $900 to $1,200 or more. That may still represent value compared to paying $6,000 or more in cash for Apartments, but it clearly defeats the under $100 narrative. Buying miles works best if you are short 5,000 to 10,000 miles for a booking you have already found, or if you need to top off your account quickly before award space disappears.
