Amex is adding 30% to Membership Rewards transfers into all three of its Avios programs, British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus, through September 27. A thousand points become 1,300 Avios. This is the return of a promo that last ran about a year ago, and it has nearly two months of runway.
Thirty percent into a real currency is already worth attention. What makes this one better than it looks is a quirk: Avios move freely between the family’s programs. Transfer into whichever door Amex feeds, then slide the balance to British Airways, Iberia, or Aer Lingus depending on which one prices your booking best. One bonus, every use case.
What 30%-off Avios actually buys
Short-haul partner flights, the workhorse. Avios price by distance, which makes them the standing answer to expensive short hops: domestic segments on American, intra-Europe flights, intra-Asia on JAL. The $380 cash fare for a 90-minute flight is exactly the purchase this bonus discounts.
Transatlantic without the London tax. Booked through Iberia, many US–Spain awards carry a fraction of the surcharges British Airways attaches to the same currency, and Aer Lingus through Dublin dodges the UK’s departure tax entirely. Same points, radically different checkout totals. That asymmetry is most of what makes the family interesting, and 30% on the way in sweetens every version of it.
Qatar’s cabins, eventually. Qatar Airways runs on Avios too, and its own program will happily receive a balance that started life in Amex. If Qsuite is on your list, this is a cheaper on-ramp than usual.
The catches, honestly
British Airways long-haul on BA’s own planes stays mediocre; the surcharges see to that, bonus or no bonus. Peak-date pricing applies in parts of the family. And as always, the seat comes first: confirm the award exists before a single point moves, because transfers don’t reverse.
One more note for the board-watchers: with this, Citi’s 40% to Turkish (through August 31, with the caveat that Turkish posts the bonus miles only after the campaign ends), and Chase’s new Aeroplan boost all running at once, August is quietly the best transfer-bonus month of the year, and for once the percentages are attached to currencies that deserve them.
